What do social workers do?

Social workers support people to navigate life’s challenges, strengthen wellbeing, and access the resources they need to live safely and meaningfully. They work alongside individuals, families, and communities experiencing concerns such as mental health difficulties, trauma, grief and loss, relationship challenges, and social disadvantage.

Social work practice is grounded in respect, human rights, and social justice. It combines therapeutic support with practical problem solving, advocacy, and connection to services, recognising that personal wellbeing is closely linked to social, cultural, and environmental factors.

What is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker?

An Accredited Mental Health Social Worker (AMHSW) is a highly qualified social worker who has met national standards set by the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) to provide specialised mental health assessment and therapy.

AMHSWs use evidence-based therapeutic approaches to support people experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, emotional regulation difficulties, and other mental health concerns. Their work is holistic and person-centered, considering not only symptoms but also relationships, life experiences, culture, and social context.

They are committed to ethical, confidential, and compassionate care, helping people build practical coping skills, strengthen resilience, and move toward meaningful change in their lives.
